The more we know the better, right? This statement definitely applies to our skin. The more we know about our skin – I think the better we are at taking care of it. So here’s some interesting and helpful stats about your skin to keep you in the know.

Your Skin is Ever Changing

To start, your skin is the largest organ on your body. Yes your skin is an organ.

It is made up of almost 19 million cells and it sheds 30,000-40,000 dead skin cells a day. Sounds kind of gross, doesn’t it? But that means your skin changes every month and the first 18-23 layers of our skin actually contain dead skin cells. One reason why moisturizing is so important.

Interestingly, skin cells also change shape – they flatten as they move to the top layer where they eventually flake off. Hmm…so now I know my flaking skin is actually dead skin cells.

I guess that’s why the experts recommend a little exfoliation every now and then to get rid of some of those dead skin cells. And, again, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

There’s Lots Packed Into Your Skin

Here’s even more skin stats. In 1 inch of skin you have:

  • 20 blood vessels
  • 650 sweat glands
  • 1,000+ nerve endings
  • 60,000 melanocytes (this makes up melanin which gives your skin its color)

Who knew our skin had so much stuff in it!

Make Sure to Take Care of Your Skin

There’s a lot going on with our skin. Your skin is your body’s first line of defense from everything so it’s important to take care of it!

The basics of any good skin care routine include – washing your face (not excessively), moisturizing, and wearing sunscreen daily. It’s pretty simple and effective.
