Too much or too little moisturizer can be no bueno for your skin. So what is that perfect amount? It’s not always easy to figure out as moisturizers don’t come with instructions. But we’ve got you covered so you can find the right balance…
Too Little vs. Too Much Moisturizer
Is it so bad if we apply too little of too much moisturizer? Let’s tackle the too little. This one seems pretty self-evident - if you don’t apply enough it won’t relieve your skin’s dryness and irritation. It’s almost like not using moisturizer at all.
If you put too much on – it can lead to a sticky, oily residue on the surface of your skin making it harder to apply other products such as sunscreen or makeup on top. And you don’t want to make applying sunscreen hard! Plus, too much moisturizer can lead to clogged pores.
So then what’s the right amount?
A Nickel Dollop
Most moisturizers come with directions that tell you to use them day and/or night but they don’t tell you how much to use. So lets hear what the experts have to say.
According to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick: "About a nickel-sized amount of moisturizer should be a good amount for your face…If you are including your neck, it may be best to use about a quarter-sized amount to ensure you have enough for the whole area."
For Dr. Garshick it’s all about forming a nice, even layer of the moisturizer on your skin. If you have particular dry patches on your face, apply a slightly more to those areas.
Garshick also recommends applying moisturizer one to two times per day. And finally, if you have any questions on your skin care routine – consulting a dermatologist is always recommended.
