It seems like common sense - you should skip moisturizing if you have oily skin, right? Why add more fuel to the fire as some would say. But it’s a myth. In fact, it’s the opposite.
Don’t Skimp On the Moisturizer If You Have Oily Skin
Counterintuitively, not moisturizing might be a contributing factor to why your skin is excessively producing oil. According to dermatologist Dr. Stacy Chimento – your skin maybe overcompensating because it’s dehydrated from lack of moisturization.
So moisturizing regularly can make your skin less oily because it helps balances out the skin’s natural oil production.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) also recommends moisturizing daily even if you have oily skin.
How to Moisturize with Oily Skin
Now that you know you can use a moisturizer, what’s the right way to do it? Well according to dermatologist Dr. Helia Eragi you should choose a lighter moisturizer (hey we have a great lightweight night cream if you’re interested ) and apply smaller amounts.
And the AAD suggests looking for a moisturizer that also contains a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher (hey we have one of those too here!).
