Due the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) recent recommendation, many of us are wearing face masks when we step outside to help curb the spread of Coronavirus/Covid-19. Something super important but that our skin might not be used to. So how do we keep it looking great and avoid irritation? Thankfully there are a few small steps we can all take. Of course, even if you do experience skin irritation, we would never advise not wearing a face mask. It’s too important.

Why Do Face Masks Create Irritation?

Face masks can create an environment for skin irritation. Why? Well according to New York City dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner: "protecting your face with a mask creates a moist, hot environment for your skin, as your breathing is being trapped."

And if your face is under those conditions for a long period of time, sweat and oil can build up and lead to acne, inflammation, and rashes.

Step 1: Wash Your Face After Wearing Your Mask

A good practice after washing your hands is to wash your face too. Cleaning your face helps you remove excess oil, sweat, and build-up to prevent flare-ups and clogged pores.

And don’t forget to wash your mask if it’s reusable or discard it if it’s not. A clean mask is best for not only Covid-19 reasons, but also for keeping skin healthy.

Step 2: Moisturize Your Skin Before and After Wearing Your Mask

According to Dr. Zeichner: “especially if you're wearing a mask, you want to make sure you skin barrier is in the best shape possible, which means it's both balanced and hydrated."

Apply that moisturizer before you put on your mask and after you take off your mask and wash your face. “Dry, cracked skin makes it easier for bacteria and other germs to get inside your body,” according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Of course, if you need a gentle cleanser or moisturizer we’d recommend our Organic Purifying Facial Cleanser, Organic Revitalizing Night Cream, or Natural Face Moisturizer SPF 30.

Self-Care Is Important

These are difficult times and it’s so important we all do our part. As part of this it’s important that we take care of ourselves. Hopefully these simple steps are one small way to do this. In the end, doing everything we can to curb the virus and keep ourselves safe is what we strive for.
