I care about how my skin looks. I mean I do run a skin care company. I would say most of my guy friends do as well although they may not admit to it. We want great skin without fuss and we don’t want to spend a lot of time or money on it. Thankfully you don’t have to. Great skin comes down to a few basic rules.
What are those rules? Well, thanks to our friends at the American Academy of Dermatology we’ve got some easy skin care tips to live by.
1. Wash Your Face Daily and After Exercising
Wash your face at least once a day and after you’ve worked out. Dirt build-ups and can irritate the skin if not cleaned away. I know it’s easy to reach for that bar soap for your face but many regular bar soaps contain harsh ingredients that can dry the skin. Reach for a mild cleanser and use lukewarm water.
2. Moisturize Daily
A moisturizer can make your skin look younger and brighter. They trap water into the skin which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines. The best time to apply a moisturizer is after your skin is damp.
3. Wear Sunscreen Everyday
No one wants their skin to look old and spotty. The best weapon against skin aging is sunscreen because sun damage leads to age spots, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Protect your skin everyday with sunscreen when you head outdoors. Think of sunscreen like toothpaste – something you use every morning before you head out.
4. Check Your Skin
It’s good to check your skin regularly for any early warning signs of skin cancer such as new spots or moles that are off-color, bleeding, or itchy.
Unfortunately skin cancer effects men more than women and the data is sobering: according to the Skin Cancer Foundation: men account for more than 50% of new cases of invasive melanoma (the deadliest from of skin cancer) — and almost 2x as many deaths.
Why are men more effected? I think because women are better about applying sunscreen everyday and checking their skin. Thankfully, when caught early skin cancer is highly treatable. For the areas you can’t see, your back for example, ask your partner or a friend for help or visit a dermatologist.
5. Practice Good Shaving Technique
We’ve all experienced razor burns, bumps and ingrown hairs. Surprisingly, a way to avoid these annoyances is to use a single-or-double-blade razor. Multi-blade razors can shave too closely to the skin. Also don’t overstretch you skin while shaving. A good practice when shaving is to wet your skin first to let the hair soften. Then use a moisturizing cream and shave in the direction of hair growth.
Finally rinse your razor after each swipe and change your blade out after 5-7 shaves.
Skin Care is Simple
It’s pretty easy to keep your skin looking healthy. It just take a few good daily habits.
