I’ll get to the punchline – your hands need SPF because they are exposed to the sun a lot. Next to your face and neck, your hands are the most exposed.
Most of us don’t wear gloves year-round and if you drive, like almost everyone, your digits on that steering wheel are getting the sun’s rays daily. Don’t drive? We all spend at least some time outside every day and this time will eventually show up on the hands as age spots, wrinkles, and more.
So, you’re probably (I hope!) applying sunscreen to your face and neck everyday but it’s less likely your applying it to your hands. All this adds up so our hands will show our age faster than our face and neck. And don’t forget all this also makes your hands susceptible to skin cancer.
As board-certified dermatologist Dr. Robert Anolik explains:
“These areas undergo substantial UV damage to the DNA, elevating the risk for skin cancer. It's easy to spot the spots on hands, and they are very telling of someone's real age.”
Thankfully there’s something we can all easily do to fix this problem – apply sunblock to our hands daily. It’s that simple! Now they’ll never be able to tell your age by your hands.
