There’s no miracle drug that can prevent skin aging. That’s a good thing. It means you don’t have to spend a lot of money or be on a waitlist to have healthy skin. All you need, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), for an effective anti-aging skin care plan is healthy skin care habits – which means everyone can have gorgeous glowing skin because it’s pretty basic.

As the AAD states “years of research supports each of these recommendations”. What recommendations? We’ve got them here for you.

1. Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen everyday is a must and is the foundation of any anti-aging skin care plan. If you don’t want to wear sunscreen – find another SPF skin care product that provides broad spectrum protection (may we suggest our Natural Face Moisturizer SPF 30 Smile) and make sure to apply it to all exposed skin on a daily basis.

Why is sunblock the building block of an anti-aging plan? Well as the AAD perfectly states “rays make our skin age more quickly. We have so much evidence that the sun prematurely ages our skin that there is actually a word to describe this effect. This word is ‘photoaging’.”

Yep, there is a word to describe what the sun does to our skin. We love the sun but there are ways to be out in it and love our skin at the same time. So remember to wear sunscreen, or another broad spectrum SPF product, and follow other sun protection tips like seeking shade during peak sun hours and covering up with clothing and accessories. Check out our post “Top 5 Sun Protection Tips” for more info.

2. Don’t Tan, Especially Indoor

A tan is a sign of skin damage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) “a tan is your skin’s response to injury, because skin cells signal that they have been hurt by UV rays by producing more pigment.”

A common misconception is that only the sun’s rays, not indoor tanning, are an issue. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Indoor tans expose skin to high levels of UV radiation that accelerate skin aging. Why speed up this process if you don’t have to?

3. Moisturize Daily

Moisturizing the skin gives it a more youthful appearance because it traps water in our skin. As we age our skin becomes drier which increases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Using a moisturizer combats this.

4. Wash Your Face

Dirt, makeup, and pollution can build-up on your skin and prevent it from renewing itself at night. This can lead to premature skin aging. So wash your face at least once a day. The AAD recommends using a mild cleanser with warm water and not overdoing it. Essentially you want to avoid harshly over scrubbing your skin.

5. Don’t Smoke

Smoking is a real troublemaker. It ages the skin by dulling and drying out its complexion as well as causing a loss of skin firmness, premature lines and wrinkles, and leathery skin. Although easier said than done, just one more reason to quit.

6. Eat Well

Yes you are what you eat and it shows on your skin. The AAD suggests a well balanced diet that includes lean proteins, vegetables, fruit, and healthy fats. Why? Well a healthy diet promotes healthy skin according to the AAD.

7. Sleep

Sleep gives your body and skin time to recharge and renew itself. There’s a reason it’s called beauty rest. With an almost 2-year old I haven’t’ gotten enough lately, ha!
