Happy Holidays! It’s my favorite time of year but also a time of year I tend to fall off the healthy train. So what can we do to be merry while also being healthy? Well I’ve got five simple tips to keep you on track this holiday season with a few from our friends at Kaiser Permanente.
Eat a Little Beforehand
So many holiday parties, so much food! A good way to not over-eat at these parties is to arrive with a slightly full stomach. Then you’ll be less likely to gorge on all those holiday cookies and candies.
Everything in Moderation
Of course don’t deprive yourself – you can still have a holiday cookie – but maybe not 10. Sometimes too much deprivation can make people binge. Just remember, everything in moderation.
Is That Drink Worth It
The holidays are definitely a time to be merry and drink. Here a few things to consider before taking a sip:
- pinot noir (5 oz) = 121 cal
- eggnog (8 oz) = 343 cal
- hot chocolate (8 oz) = 222 cal
- champagne (5 oz), 89 cal
Keep Up Your Fitness Routine
Don’t stop exercising just because the holidays rolled around. It’s easy to get sidetracked during this time with all the parties, travel and cold weather. Keeping up with your fitness routine can reduce holiday stress and prevent you from over-indulging. Plus gym and fitness classes are usually emptier around this time so you can work out in peace.
Get Some Rest
The holidays can be stressful and parties go late into the night. Don’t deprive yourself of sleep. Sleep deprivation can lead to unhealthy food decisions.
