Ingredients Truths: Supple Skin with Almond Oil

Almonds in a white bowl

Almond oil is a fantastic ingredient in skincare products. It’s been used for ages as a way to soothe chapped and dry skin thanks to its fatty acids. That’s why you’ll find it in so many skin care products – including our cleanser and night cream.

It’s also great as part of your diet. I should know, I ate a lot of almonds while pregnant. A handful were the perfect snack. My skin also glowed during pregnancy. Coincidence? I think not. Almonds and almond oil are great for the skin.

Rich in Fatty Acids

Sweet almond oil or Prunus Amygdalus (its official scientific name that appears on product labels) is extracted from almond kernels.

This oil is packed with fatty acids such as oleic, linoleic, and myristic. Fatty acids are the building blocks of healthy cell membranes in the body.

Skin so Soft and Clean

So what about fatty acids in skincare products? The ones in sweet almond oil actually act as a lubricant on the skin’s surface. This gives the skin a soft and smooth appearance.

Another benefit - Almond oil can soften and dislodge dirt and buildup from skin pores and hair follicles. That’s one reason it’s in our cleanser.

Now, what happens if you also don’t get enough fatty acids in your diet? Well, that can affect your skin too. It may appear dry, inflamed and prone to acne. So eating a handful of almonds – as I did – is great too.

Block Island Organics and Almond Oil

Almond oil has so many amazing moisturizing and cleansing benefits – we had to make it a featured ingredient in our Organic Revitalizing Night Cream and Organic Purifying Facial Cleanser.

As far as my personal experience, both products worked great on my skin during my pregnancy. They kept my skin hydrated and refreshed. It was great to see products we’ve worked so hard on work so well.
