Yes yes yes - the title of my article says it all! Sunscreen is the top ranked treatment for fighting wrinkles. Imagine how excited I was (but not surprised) when I saw this message in a recent Women's Health article (and then reposted on Yahoo Beauty) about sunscreen. Here's the deal...
Recently Women's Health magazine published an article titled "6 Wrinkle-Fighting Treatments, Ranked in Order of Effectiveness" and interviewed leading dermatologists about what really works to prevent skin aging and what are just expensive gimmicks.
"When it comes to fighting wrinkles, there are a dizzying number of procedures and products that claim to turn back the clock—and many of them carry costly price tags. But what really works? We asked two leading dermatologists to rank the treatments that will truly lead you to line-free skin and are worth your hard-earned dollars."
Ok so I gave the punch line away in the title of our post - the #1 recommended treatment by the dermatologists Women's Health interviewed is SUNSCREEN! Here is what they said:
"You may be surprised to see this unsexy workhorse at the top of the list, but simply wearing sunscreen all year round will both help prevent wrinkles and heal fine lines by protecting and allowing your skin to naturally repair itself, says Doris Day, M.D., clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University Langone Medical Center. However, your results will only be as good as the formula you choose: Make sure it’s an SPF of 30 or more for adequate protection, and apply it every morning to your face and neck—or else it doesn’t count!"
I would add look for the words "Broad Spectrum" on any sunscreen you choose as SPF is only a measure of protection against UVB rays. A broad spectrum SPF product (all of ours are broad spectrum) will protect against both UVA and UVB rays. A general rule of thumb is UVB rays cause sunburn and skin cancer while UVA rays cause skin aging and skin cancer. That's why broad spectrum is so important.
The article gives five other treatment recommendations however none of them are as simple, inexpensive or ranked as high as sunscreen. In fact, many of them require outpatient procedures, thousands of dollars and a doctor's visit.
So there you have it, sunscreen, one of the best, most accessible and most affordable answers to preventing the signs of aging - no go and get some everyone
