Top Amusements Parks in America - Outdoor Life

We often say that summertime equals beach, travel, sun and sunscreen.  I'd like to add another word or rather words to our list of summertime fun - "amusement park"!  I remember as a kid loving the summer because it also meant going on wonderful rides full of thrills and screams.  Recently I got to experience DisneyLand with my nieces and it was awesome seeing their excitement, energy and love for the park.  I kind of felt like a kid again.  So as part of our outdoor life series and to celebrate amusement parks - I put together a list of the top amusement parks in the United States.

I actually did a lot of research putting this list together and I placed all the information in an easy to use spreadsheet - kind of nerdy...but effective!  I have to say I am a little proud of my amusement park work.  My analysis takes into account the "best amusement park" lists from a few top travel (Travel Channel, Fodor's and TripAdvisor) and news sites (CNN and Forbes).  I looked at the top 10-15 amusements parks that each outlet listed and then compiled a master list.  The master list includes the name of the amusement park, the location of the park and the outlet that ranked it as a top park.

You'll see the big guys like Disney's Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios Florida on the list and some lesser-known hidden gems like Schlitterbahn Water Park and Kentucky Kingdom.  Additionally the list includes parks with a range of reasons to go - like those that offer the most roller coasters (Six Flags Magic Mountain and Cedar Point) and parks that have the most roller coaster vertical inversions (that's a mouthful, say that five times fast) like Kings Island and Six Flags Magic Mountain again.  I guess it shouldn't be too much of a surprise but the list shows Florida and California are the king amusement park states.

One great thing is the list includes something for everyone - from little kids who will love the magic of Legoland to adults who can get their thrills at Six Flags.

I must say I had fun putting it together.  I want to check off all of the parks below from my bucket list!

Hopfully my list helps you plan your next vacation but if you can't find something that fits the bill, Yahoo Travel recently posted an article about the best amusement parks in each state.  For Rhode Island they chose Adventure Land Narragansett.  It happens to be right by the ferry to our beloved Block Island.  Why not hit the park and then hop on over to The Block!?
