Block Island Organics, Don't Fry Day and Sun Safety Awareness

With Memorial Day around the corner and our great sale (ok I had to plug it) the official start of summer is here.  Summer means warm weather, vacation, beaches and lots of sunshine.  Of course at Block Island Organics summer also means sunblock (really it's year-round for us) and playing safe and smart in the sun.  The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention seems to agree.  They've designated Friday, May 22nd as "Don't Fry Day" to encourage sun safety awareness as we head into summer.

As part of Don't Fry Day The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention is not only raising awareness but also providing useful tips for sun protection.  Actually many of their tips have been mentioned across our blog posts.  Here is a quick reminder:

  • Generously Apply Sunscreen
  • Do Not Burn or Tan
  • Seek Shade
  • Wear Sun-Protective Clothing
  • Use Extra Caution Near Water, Snow, and Sand

UV rays from the sun and other sources like tanning beds are a leading cause of skin damage and premature skin aging.  We'll let you head over to The National Council of Skin Cancer Prevention to see some of the more sobering stats around skin cancer.  All we'll say here is that skin cancer is on the rise and it's the most common cancer in the United States so sun protection is important.

Fortunately as The National Council of Skin Cancer Prevention so eloquently states:

"Skin cancer is highly curable if found early and can be prevented. Remember to Slip! Slop! Slap!...and Wrap when you’re outdoors — slip on a shirt, slop on broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, slap on a wide-brimmed hat, and wrap on sunglasses. The best way to detect skin cancer early is to examine your skin regularly and recognize changes in moles and skin growths."

And it's not just The National Council of Skin Cancer Prevention that is behind this day, other organizations in support of "Don't Fry Day" include the Environmental Protection Agency and the American Cancer Society.  Both of their sites provide more information and resources for sun safety.

We love the sun and having fun outside, we just like to stay protected while doing so and have a bunch of suncare smarts tips for you.  Here's to "Don't Fry Day" and summertime!
