It's Earth Day today, April 22nd, 2015. Today is also the 45th anniversary of Earth Day. At Block Island Organics we are passionate about the outdoors so we care about the state of our environment. So in celebration we'd like to highlight some history, fun news and special offers around this important day.

History
Earth Day is a day where we honor the planet and our environment. Earth Day was proposed by John McConnell (a peace activist) and Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations and then officially founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. Some 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day through peaceful activities and demonstrations in favor of environmental reform.
Earth Day has been credited with the passing of a number of environment laws including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act. Today according to the Earth Day Network, it's the largest civic observance in the world with more than 1 billion participants.

Lots of different companies and organizations are getting involved in Earth Day - below are some cool highlights:
- NASA is getting social and asking users to share pictures and videos of their favorite places on Earth with the hashtag #NoPlaceLikeHome
- Philips is launching a new line of affordable 60-watt LED lightbulbs
- Apple has created an Earth Day 2015 collection that features apps that can help you reduce your carbon footprint, improve the planet or are about the planet
Special Offers
To get even more people involved, some companies are offering discounts, activities and free things. Go Earth! For example, American Eagle Outfitters has partnered with Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation a non-profit organization that builds sustainable homes for people in need. When you donate your old jeans to be recycled into housing material, you can get 20% of your next jeans purchase there. Anthropologie another clothing retailer is also getting in on the Earth Day Action. Some of their stores are offering rainforest crafts for kids.
Additionally, Philips and Home Depot are partnering to make the 60-watt LED bulb available in two-for-one pack for $5. Caribou Coffee is offering refills in April when you buy their Earth Month Tumblr.
