Back in 2019 the local government of Key West, Florida voted to ban the sale of sunscreens containing the chemical UV filters oxybenzone and octinoxate. The law would go into effect in January 2021, if signed by the governor. But now the Florida state legislature approved a bill to prevent local governments from regulating any over-the-counter drugs or cosmetics – which include sunscreens as sunscreens are considered over-the-counter drugs by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Ok, I admit I’m biased but I’ve been working non-stop for what feels like two years of my life on developing a great new addition to our mineral sunscreen line. Why? Because I honestly believe sunscreen is the best anti-aging weapon and sun protection is vital to our health. So I wanted to expand our line of sunscreens to offer more options for you. Plus, I personally want more options as an avid sunscreen wearer myself.

Hawaii legislators recently introduced bills to ban the sale of ALL chemical sunscreens in the state. These bills expand upon a bill Hawaii’s legislature passed in 2018 that bans the sale of chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate (without a prescription issued by a licensed healthcare provider).

A team of scientists recently found an environmentally friendly way to make a sunscreen. How? They used cashew nut shells. Now that’s impressive – it’s both sustainable and natural. Now it’s not an approved sunscreen active yet, so you won’t see it in sunscreens replacing UV filters, but maybe in time it will become one.

Not all mineral sunscreens are created equal. What we mean is that many mineral sunscreens marketed as mineral are not mineral only and do in fact contain chemical sunscreens in them. Yeah, we agree, it can be a little confusing and concerning if you want a mineral only product. But don’t worry we’re here to help you separate fact from marketing when it comes to your sunscreen purchases.

Homemade sunscreens are not safe. You might be thinking that’s convenient, you own a sunscreen company and of course you want us to buy your sunscreen. But that’s not why – DIY sunscreens are not tested (commercial sunscreens are tested) so claims about their level of protection cannot be validated. You can get burned badly. Still don’t believe me? A recent study of over 180 Pinterest DIY sunscreen pins found that a vast majority of them offered insufficient sun protection.
