A little bit of oxybenzone, a very common chemical UV filter found in sunscreens (not ours!), can kill coral reefs. Not only do the reefs die but also the ecosystem they support can fade away too. It’s why states like Hawaii are trying to pass legislation to ban sunscreens with oxybenzone. Encouragingly, researchers from the University of Puerto Rico are working on a fix (of course, switching to an all-mineral sunscreen like ours would help too).

The short answer – no, a base tan is not a way to protect your skin from the sun. As dermatologist Dr. Lisa Chipps said to the Skin Cancer Foundation “…just as there’s no safe amount of smoking, you can’t get a little safe tan. The damage it does, even if it’s just a bit here and there, adds up over time and contributes to overall aging as well as skin cancer.”

I know it may sound odd but kids are also at risk of skin cancer. In fact, 40-60% of sun exposure occurs before the age of 20. Thus it’s important for adolescents to start good sun protection habits sooner rather than later. In our on-going series to support Skin Cancer Awareness month this May – here’s info and advice on protecting kids and preventing adolescent skin cancer.
