by kelly / August, 6 2014 01:30
Here at Block Island Organics we are passionate about smart, fun and safe suncare. As part of that we want to spread the word on sun safety to as many people as possible. It's an important topic and recently even the acting U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Boris D. Lushniak, got behind the cause and released "The Surgeon General's Call To Action To Prevent Skin Cancer". The document is a comprehensive 112 pages (don't worry, at the bottom of this article we have links to a few summaries) and as the title says a call to action for increased awareness, policies and research for preventing skin cancer. Spray sunscreens are popular these days. Just spray it on and go, right? Well not so fast says Consumer Reports. by kelly / July, 23 2014 01:30
Lululemon is not a company to shy away from provocative statements. Nevertheless, I was surprised when they made a pretty bold statement about sunscreen. On their shopping bags, one of their new manifestos reads "sunscreen absorbed into the skin might be worse for you than sunshine. get the right amount of sunshine". In addition to their bags, this statement is on their website manifesto page. [More]

by kelly / June, 25 2014 01:30
I often get asked by my friends and especially mom friends: what should I look for in a sunscreen for myself and for my kids, what's the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen, how much and how often should I apply? Thankfully we've written blog posts on all of these topics! But one question that we have not tackled here yet is: what sunscreen should I definitely avoid? [More]

EWG Names Block Island Organics a Top Sunscreen

by Will / May, 28 2014 01:30
Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit consumer advocacy group, puts out a new sunscreen guide. This is the guide's 8th year and we are named one of the best sunscreens out there! What is the EWG guide? It contains hundreds of sunscreens / sunblocks the EWG examines and rates. They painstakingly look through sunscreens ingredient by ingredient to determine what works and what is safe. In their own words it "gives shoppers an easy-to-use, searchable online database to the safest, most effective sun protection products." [More]

by kelly / April, 2 2014 01:30
I wish I started using sunscreen as a child. I didn't become a daily sunscreen user until my 30s and the effects of sun damage are cumulative. So parents, it's really important to start protecting your kids from the sun from day one. Yes - day one. Trust me, they will thank you later on in life when they have no fine lines, wrinkles or skin damage in their 40s! [More]

My 5 Keys to Healthy Skin

by kelly / March, 19 2014 01:30
Even though I'm 35, sometimes I'm asked for ID when I go out. I pretend to be insulted but it kind of feels good when someone says it. Ha! I think I'm asked is because I've kept my skin in good shape over the years. Once in a while my friends even ask how I keep my skin looking young. It's probably a testament to my mom's nagging, okay, loving advice for 35 years! She taught me a few key things that I think help everyday. [More]
