The predominant feeling is that skin care is for women. Sure it’s slowly changing but generally women take better care of their skin than men. I often hear from my male friends “I don’t need skin care - rugged is in”. But healthy skin and good sun protection should be a must for any man because the reality is more men are diagnosed with skin cancer than women.

There is a misconception that those with darker skin tones are not at risk of skin cancer. Unfortunately skin cancer doesn’t discriminate by race, ethnicity, age or gender, as the sun is color-blind. In fact, according to a 2016 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology melanoma (a form of skin cancer) is more deadly in people of color.

Yes, that’s right, treat sunscreen like toothpaste - make it daily habit. That is great advice I heard from a doctor. Why? Because unfortunately skin cancer is on the rise, one of the best skin cancer preventions is sunscreen, and studies show treating sunblock like toothpaste makes you much more likely to use it daily.

I know it may sound odd but kids are also at risk of skin cancer. In fact, 40-60% of sun exposure occurs before the age of 20. Thus it’s important for adolescents to start good sun protection habits sooner rather than later.
