With shops still open, weather in the 70s and plenty to do, we totally agree with the NY Times; on tiny Block Island summer lasts longer. In fact from Labor Day to Columbus Day and even Thanksgiving, there’s still a lot to look forward to on our little gem. Plus the crowds thin out making the island feel like your personal secret getaway. As the Boston Globe puts it, autumn is fun and affordable on Block Island.

Want to explore Block Island? Can’t get enough of that summer music festival experience? Conserfest is an awesome way to do both. It’s an annual non-profit music festival from which proceeds and donations go to support Block Island’s eco-conservation efforts. Pretty cool we say.

I’m a golfer and I know golfers spend a ton of time outside. A single round can last from 4 to 6 hours. That’s a lot of time in the sun. Even on a cloudy day sun protection is a must. So what Suncare Smarts should you use to protect yourself? Sunscreen is a definite and we have a few other easy tips but first a video from the PGA Tour and the Skin Cancer Foundation.

4th of July is one of the biggest holidays on the island. Whether you are coming over just for the day or making a weeklong stay out of it, there is a lot to do - fireworks, parades, beaches, BBQs, and more. We often say that summertime equals beach, travel, sun and sunscreen. I'd like to add another word or rather words to our list of summertime fun - "amusement park"! I remember as a kid loving the summer because it also meant going on wonderful rides full thrills and screams. Recently I got to experience Disney Land with my nieces and it was awesome seeing their excitement, energy and love for the park. I kind of felt like a kid again. So as part of our outdoor life series and to celebrate amusement parks - I put together a list of the top amusement parks in the United States.

Winter is almost here in New England and while half of me wants to stay indoors all season, I know there are a ton of cold weather activities that will get me excited. They just require a little bit more clothing, sunscreen (yes you need sunscreen even in the winter) and some hot cocoa. Everyone knows the usual winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and ice skating - all are awesome and snowboarding is one of my favorites. But what if you want something off the beaten path?

This week I got to talk to a very special lady, Holly. She's not only an expert gardener but the mother of our co-founder Will (and my mother in law). Holly keeps a tip top garden at her home in NY and has also built some beautiful gardens for a number of clients. She's always trying to teach Will about flowers but let's just say he's more interested in AstroTurf. Luckily I got to chat with her as I think gardening is a great way to get outdoors. Holly offered some quick and useful tips for gardening in the fall and year round that I thought would be great to share. Check out my conversation with her below.

Football season is one of my favorite times of year. Yes, I am a big football fan. The New York Giants are my favorite team and it's been that way for as long as I can remember. So when the games start my outdoor activities shift from summer beach themes to football Sundays. Here at Block Island Organics we believe in enjoying the outdoors. So if you are looking for active ways to enjoy football season (I admit, sometimes I sit and watch on tv too) here are some thoughts. Of course, wear sunscreen while your at it!

Each year local Rhode Island Artist Eben Horton starts his Glass Float Project anew. It's become an annual event celebrating the beauty of Block Island in a fun, interactive way. This year is no different and Eben needs your help to keep the project going. While this project is not tied to Block Island Organics, we love highlighting and supporting projects that showcase the beauty and promote Block Island. It's where we started and we love the island.
