The results are complicated and while at Block Island Organics we make mineral only sunscreens – we feel it’s important to keep people up on the latest news in sun protection. More and more concern is growing over chemical sunscreens and the danger they pose to coral reefs. Hawaii recently became the first state to ban the sale of chemical sunscreens. This law will go into effect January 2021. Now the Florida legislature is considering a similar ban on chemical sunscreens.

Hawaii became the first state to pass a bill banning the sale of chemical sunscreens that contribute to the destruction of coral reefs. It’s interesting timing considering May is Skin Cancer Awareness month. But don’t worry, that doesn’t mean you have to get sunburned in Hawaii. Look to mineral only sunscreens (like ours ☺) that don’t harm coral reefs and keep your skin safe in the sun.

Coral reefs are facing the threat of extinction. Increasing water temperatures and UV exposure are really damaging our reefs. For instance, last year experts declared large sections of the Great Barrier Reef dead. While all this is a bit depressing, help is on the way. Scientists in Australia came up with a sunscreen – different from what you’re probably thinking – to protect our reefs.

A little bit of oxybenzone, a very common chemical UV filter found in sunscreens (not ours!), can kill coral reefs. Not only do the reefs die but also the ecosystem they support can fade away too. It’s why states like Hawaii are trying to pass legislation to ban sunscreens with oxybenzone. Encouragingly, researchers from the University of Puerto Rico are working on a fix (of course, switching to an all-mineral sunscreen like ours would help too).
