Discovering Block Island: America's First Offshore Wind Farm

by Will / August, 12 2015 01:30
Our Discovering Block Island series showcases interesting things about the island and we think this definitely qualifies. It turns out Block Island is set to become the site of America's first offshore wind farm. My first thought - it's surprising we haven't seen one in the United States before. Apparently they are pretty common in Europe but none have made it here yet. Now some folks are for the wind farm and some are against it. Both financial and environmental cases can be made on either side of the project. Personally have a neutral stance. We can see why it could be good and also understand why it raises concerns. [More]

Discovering Block Island: Block Island Race Week

by Will / June, 24 2015 01:30
This week is the 50th Anniversary of Block Island Race Week and the latest in our Discovering Block Island series. Race Week goes all the way back to 1965 and this year brings 2000 sailors and 169 boats to the weeklong race. A big boon for the little island we love, it's held biennially in odd numbered years (the next one will be 2017) making it all that much more special. The Storm Trysail Club puts on the event and raises money for charity too (over $100,000 to date for local charities). There's a ton of info over at BlockIslandRaceWeek.com. Just a great event overall. Of course, if you plan on attending make sure to bring sunscreen! [More]

Discovering Block Island: How to Get There - Planes, Trains, (Ferries) & Automobiles

by Will / June, 3 2015 01:30
There are a ton of things to do on Block Island (check out our Discovering Block Island series) but the fist step is getting there. Given it's an island, at some point a plane or a ferry will be involved and there are a surprising amount of options for such a small place. I actually find getting there part of the fun. It's a quintessential New England experience without all the hubbub of Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard. [More]

Get Spooky - Rhode Island and Block Island Halloween Events

by Will / October, 22 2014 01:30
Halloween is one of my favorite times of year.  As a kid it was all about candy, candy, candy.  As an adult I can't say much has changed!  I still have a sweet tooth.  This year I'll be trick-or-treating with a few of my little nieces and I'm hoping they let me have a piece or two.  But what else is out there for Halloween? Well I did a little investigation for the Block Island / Rhode Island area and there's everything from hay rides to pumpkin picking to haunted houses. Tons of attractions. [More]

Discovering Block Island - A Beach Paradise

by Will / August, 20 2014 01:30
17 miles of beaches, 17 miles on an island with a year round population just over 1,000 and a land area just under 10 square miles. That's a lot of beaches and one of the many things that makes Block Island so special. Plus you can find just about any kind of beach you like. Broad sandy beaches, rocky nooks and crannies, majestic bluffs, lonely stretches of sand or actives swaths with people, volleyball nets and plenty of waves. It's all there for you just 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island and all free. [More]

Discovering Block Island - Painted Rock

by Will / June, 4 2014 01:30
Painted Rock is one of those local in-the-know things. You'll find a few posts about it on the internet but for the most part you'll either find out from a local or because you cruised right past. Quite literally, it is a painted rock on Block Island. Albeit one that's been painted hundreds if not thousands of times with message ranging from the absurd to wedding proposals to presidential welcomes and beyond. Plus, you can have a go at painting it any time you like... [More]

Discovering Block Island - Mohegan Bluffs

by Will / February, 12 2014 01:30
Ever since I first visited Block Island years ago, the bluffs have been one of my favorite spots. They are truly majestic and it's not just the bluffs but also the beach below. Here at Block Island Organics we think it's important to highlight the beauty of this little slice of paradise and this is the first in a series of posts dedicated to doing just that. So let's start with Mohegan Bluffs and don't forget your sunscreen! [More]
