Ingredient Truths: What Are Antioxidants?

by kelly / October, 7 2015 01:30
This past weekend I was out to dinner with my girlfriends and while we were trading stories of diet and exercise, the subject of antioxidants came up. My friends all agreed they were important because they read something about them somewhere but no one actually knew what they were. Like my girlfriends, I'm sure most of you have heard or read about antioxidants. Have you ever wondered what they actually are and do? Well I'm here to help answer these questions in this week's Ingredient Truths post so you can be the smartest person at your next dinner party. [More]

Men's Skin Care: The Value of a Good Cleanser

by Will / September, 23 2015 01:30
Men often think of skin care as a women's thing or, at best, something to begrudgingly slap on after a shave. We don't dispute that after a shave a moisturizer is a real skin saver. We'd just add that a complete men's skin care routine (women's too) doesn't need to be complicated. A cleanser, some moisturizer and sunscreen are really all a guy (or gal) needs. So why a cleanser? Let's take a look. [More]

5 Fall Skin Care Tips

by kelly / September, 16 2015 01:30
Summer is officially over - I know it's sad. But don't worry fall is here and that means the return of pumpkin scones at Starbucks (a personal favorite of mine), football, beautiful foliage and some cooler temps. The transition from one season to another also brings about some changes in skin care. Of course some things should always remain consistent year-round (like wearing sunscreen). Below are five fall skin care tips [More]

Black Ink Tattoos, Skin Cancer and the Need for Sunscreen

by kelly / September, 9 2015 01:30
Yes my title is a lot and I'll get to explaining everything and how it all works together. Recently I happened upon some articles related to blackwork tattoos and the prevention of skin cancer that stemmed from a study completed earlier in the summer. Blackwork tattoos are tattoos that use black ink. I guess that's good about the study's findings but I don't want people to interpret this study to think it precludes you from sun protection or using sunscreen if you have blackwork tattoos. [More]

Discovering Block Island: The Flying Chinese Food Delivery Service

by Will / September, 2 2015 01:30
Block Island is a small place, it's just 7 miles long and 3 miles wide. Despite this it does have a bustling town with many restaurants (over 50), bars and shops. Of course, at such a small size it can't cover every cuisine and that's where New England Airline's take-out food delivery comes in. Yup, they'll deliver your take-out order via plane. Whether it's Chinese food, sushi, pizza or something else entirely, New England Airlines is game. [More]

Ingredient Truths: Sodium Lauryl / Laureth Sulfate, Toxic or Not?

by kelly / August, 26 2015 01:30
I'm back with another one of our Ingredient Truth series blog posts and this time I'm tackling the two most commonly used forms of sulfates: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Why should you care? Well there's a lot of mixed info about their safety on the internet and since these two ingredients, according to some industry experts, can be found in close to 90% of shampoos and body washes, I think it's important to understand them. So is something this commonplace toxic for you? Well yes and no - I'll get to that below. [More]

A Dangerous Art Form: #SunburnArt

by kelly / August, 19 2015 01:30
Recently there's been a bunch of news about the hashtag #sunburnart popping up on social media. The hashtag is exactly what it sounds like - people creating artwork on their skin by selective applying sunscreen and getting sunburned elsewhere. I'm not going to sugar coat it; sunburn art is not art - it's dangerous, unhealthy and extremely painful. [More]

Discovering Block Island: America's First Offshore Wind Farm

by Will / August, 12 2015 01:30
Our Discovering Block Island series showcases interesting things about the island and we think this definitely qualifies. It turns out Block Island is set to become the site of America's first offshore wind farm. My first thought - it's surprising we haven't seen one in the United States before. Apparently they are pretty common in Europe but none have made it here yet. Now some folks are for the wind farm and some are against it. Both financial and environmental cases can be made on either side of the project. Personally have a neutral stance. We can see why it could be good and also understand why it raises concerns. [More]
